A water sample test of the STPat the Prabhu Violetta housing complex at Dabolim revealed a shocking fecalcoliform level of 920x104 (92,00,000) MPN per 100ml, instead of thepermissible limit of less than or equal to 100 MPN/100ml.

A report of the test conducted by theGoa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) clearly indicated that fecal coliformhad exceeded the permissible limit.

According to the report, 250 ml fromthe final treated STP water sample was collected for analysis on March 16.

The report on March 20 indicated thatthe water sample was greyish yellow and had a foul odour. It also indicated avisible effluent discharge, with water pumped into the garden and storm waterdrain.

It was also observed that rawsewage/untreated sewage was being pumped into the treated water tank.

When contacted, a source at the GoaState Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) confirmed that the test result showedthat the fecal coliform level was 920x104 (92,00,000) MPN per 100ml,instead of the permissible limit of less than or equal to 100 MPN/100ml.

“Levels of 106 or 108are usually found in untreated sewage. This particular reading of 104indicates that the sewage was not effectively or efficiently treated,” said thesource.

During a review meeting convened bySouth Goa District Collector Egna Cletus IAS on Friday with all stakeholdersconcerned, the Health Department informed that microbiological culture testswere conducted on multiple water samples.

Samples from garden pipe outlet, bore well, andborewell tap outlet were found positive (contaminated), while samples from PWDwater supply tank, swimming pool, and PWD tap outlets were found negative(safe).
