MARGAO

Residents of Madel on Thursday raised an uproar over land filling activity along the Margao wholesale fish market road.

PWD Minster, Digambar Kamat, however, later told the media that the PWD is executing work on strengthening the road shoulders along the roads to facilitate parking and over cleanliness of the area.

The residents led by Milagres Fernandes, Crydon Madeira and others on Thursday morning claimed that trucks load of mud is being dumped on the road to fill up the low lying fields adjoining the wholesale fish market. He demanded to know why politician and leaders have maintained silence on the activity when the mud filling will affect the adjoining fields.

He warned that the people of Madel and surrounding areas will not take things lying down if fields and low-lying areas are filled up for development.

Milagres suspected that the land filling under the pretext of strengthening the road shoulders will only invite hordes of illegal vendors along the road stretch.

Thursday morning saw Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai along with the PWD contractor and the land owner inspecting the area. The PWD contractor told the media that the work of strengthening of the road shoulders is being carried out at the instruction of PWD Minister Digambar Kamat.

“There is not mud filling of low lying areas. Mud has been dumped alongside the road to take up the work of strengthening of the road shoulders”, the contractor said.

The Fatorda MLA later told the media that the work, which is being executed at the instructions of the PWD Minister, will create space for vehicular parking along the road shoulders.
