Tony M. Rodrigues was born in Bicholim on June 10, 1923, to Celestino Piedade Rodrigues. A tailor by profession and a dedicated freedom activist, he played an active role in Goa’s liberation movement through his steadfast involvement in nationalist campaigns against Portuguese rule. He joined the GYL in 1945 and later became associated with the National Congress Goa, United Front of Goans and the GNU, where he served as a founding member and General Secretary. Through these platforms, he worked tirelessly to mobilise support for Goa’s freedom struggle. Rodrigues organised mass meetings at Cross Maidan in Bombay, distributed handbills, affixed posters and helped spread nationalist awareness among Goans living outside the territory. He also participated in the historic August 15, 1955 satyagraha organised by Peter Alvares, which marked a significant phase in Goa’s resistance movement. Alongside his public activism, he provided financial and organisational support to satyagrahis, helping sustain the movement during some of its most challenging years. His contribution remains an enduring part of Goa’s struggle for liberation.
