MARGAO
Ahead of the approaching monsoon season, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Digambar Kamat on Friday launched the annual desilting drive of major storm water nullahs in his home constituency of Margao, with an emphasis on flood prevention and improving urban drainage infrastructure.

The pre-monsoon desilting works were formally inaugurated near Dias Bar at Aquem, on the side of the railway station area, where the Minister said the initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment towards public welfare, cleaner surroundings and effective monsoon preparedness.

Speaking to the media after launching the works, Kamat said the proactive exercise is aimed at ensuring the smooth flow of storm water, preventing waterlogging in vulnerable areas, reducing inconvenience to residents and commuters, and strengthening the city’s resilience during the heavy monsoon months.

“The work reflects our continued commitment towards public welfare, cleaner surroundings, and effective monsoon preparedness. Through timely preventive measures and on-ground action, we remain dedicated to safeguarding public infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for the people,” the Minister said.

Kamat later visited the Khareband area, where he launched another phase of the desilting operations in the presence of Margao Municipal Council ward councillor Mahesh Amonkar.

The Minister said the desilting works being undertaken in Margao have been estimated at around Rs 9 lakh. He added that alongside the PWD initiative, the Margao Municipal Council has also intensified its own pre-monsoon operations by carrying out large-scale cleaning and desilting of drains and gutters across the commercial city.

The annual desilting exercise assumes significance in Margao, which has historically witnessed flooding and waterlogging in several low-lying areas during intense rainfall. Authorities said the timely cleaning of nullahs, roadside drains and culverts is expected to improve storm water discharge and minimise disruptions during the upcoming monsoon season.
