Gathering at the site, protesters opposed what they described as a proposed mega construction project spread across nearly 35,000 square metres of notified private forest. They raised concerns over the potential loss of biodiversity and the erosion of traditional forest resources that have sustained local communities for decades.
Residents warned that continued destruction would deprive future generations of access to forest produce and natural ecosystems integral to village life. “If the forests are destroyed, future generations will lose access to nature and forest fruits that have been part of local life for decades,” a villager said.
Alvito D’Silva, chairperson of the Biodiversity Management Committee of Olaulim-Pomburpa, said the committee has been monitoring the property since last year and had earlier flagged incidents of fire. He alleged that the secluded location of the site has made it vulnerable to unchecked activity.
“This is notified private forest land. If action is not taken now, nearby forest areas could also face the same threat. We must unite to protect our land and natural beauty,” D’Silva said.
Highlighting ecological concerns, another resident said the plateau hosts rich biodiversity and warned that fencing such a large tract could disrupt wildlife movement. “Fencing will trap animals and restrict their natural habitat,” he said, urging greater vigilance among locals.
Activist Dhiren Phadte alleged that while initial permission was granted only for fencing, heavy machinery was later deployed and trees were uprooted. “After we intervened, the work was halted, but fencing has now been completed. There are also attempts to burn trees by piling dry leaves near their roots,” he claimed. Phadte demanded that the land be designated a No Development Zone (NDZ) and called for government action, including possible seizure of the property.
Goa Green Brigade convenor Avertino Miranda termed the site a “disaster spot” and warned that similar destruction is occurring across the State. Social activist Dipesh Naik echoed these concerns, alleging that tree burning could be a precursor to construction activity.
Naik also called for intensified public action, including a possible sit-in protest, if the project is not halted.
