Fire officer Gill D’Souza informed that the fire originated at the plastic bottle pressing machine, before the fire spread to the other parts of the massive scrap yard. He said timely fire fighting operation by the Margao fire brigade helped to contain the fire and stopped it from spreading toward the adjoining residential locality.
The incident has only raised questions over the illegal activity in the scrap yard, with the fire officer categorically stating that the activity was undertaken without any NOC from the fire department. “It is apparent that the activity inside the scrap yard was being carried out in a haphazard manner and was a cause of the fire spreading around the unit”, he said.
