SANGUEM
After decades of inconvenience faced by members of the public, particularly senior citizens, the Mamlatdar building at Sanguem is finally set to become more accessible with the installation of a lift facility.
The Mamlatdar building, which houses several important government departments, was constructed and inaugurated in 1989. Although the original plans for the building had made provision for the installation of a lift, the facility was never put in place at the time of its construction.
Over the years, the absence of a lift caused considerable hardship to citizens visiting the offices located on the upper floors of the building.
Senior citizens, differently-abled persons and others requiring regular access to the Mamlatdar office, Block Development Office (BDO), Civil Supplies Department, and the Public Works Department sub-divisions dealing with roads and water supply had to climb multiple flights of stairs to avail of essential services.
Recognising the difficulties faced by the public, Social Welfare Minister and Sanguem MLA Subhash Phal Dessai took up the matter with authorities concerned, which was subsequently followed constantly by social worker Jervis Fernandes.
Following inspections and necessary follow-up, the proposal for the installation of a lift was initiated. The project, however, required the completion of various government procedures and technical formalities before it could be implemented.
As part of the latest developments, the required three-phase electrical connection has now been provided for the lift system. With the major groundwork completed, the lift facility is expected to be made operational shortly.
The new amenity is expected to bring immense relief to senior citizens, regular visitors and employees working in the building, making government services more accessible and citizen-friendly.
