Concerns over the proposed Chodan“Salai bridge project dominated discussions at the gram sabha meeting of Salvador do Mundo, where villagers demanded greater transparency from the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).

Local resident Dinesh Dias informed the sabha that GSIDC has already invited tenders for the construction of the bridge, estimated to cost Rs 275 crore, connecting Madel (Chorao) to Salvador do Mundo. However, he highlighted growing anxiety among residents, pointing out that the village’s narrow roads may not support such large-scale infrastructure development.

Villagers also expressed fears about the potential environmental impact, particularly the likelihood of large-scale tree cutting, which they believe could adversely affect both the ecosystem and their livelihoods. In light of these concerns, the gram sabha passed a resolution urging GSIDC to present a detailed PowerPoint presentation of the project to residents. According to Dias, officials indicated that such a presentation would require direction from the government.

Acting Sarpanch Rajesh Savoikar, stated that the panchayat has made it mandatory for builders to display construction plans at project sites to ensure transparency. He also noted that the panchayat has undertaken the maintenance of its ground using its own funds.

During the meeting, Panchayat Secretary Dhanesh Khorjuvekar presented the budget estimates for the financial year 2026“27, pegged at Rs5.57 crore. The projected income includes Rs36 lakh in government grants, Rs49.75 lakh from taxes, and Rs33.60 lakh from various fees.

On the expenditure side, Rs1.36 crore has been allocated for public works, including road repairs, garbage collection, garden maintenance, and drainage works. Administrative expenses account for Rs67.96 lakh, while sanitation and public health have been allotted Rs3.10 lakh. Education and cultural activities have been earmarked Rs2.10 lakh. The Panchayat expects to close the financial year with a balance of Rs3.24 crore.

The meeting began with a welcome address by Acting Sarpanch Savoikar, followed by the reading of the minutes of the previous gram sabha by Secretary Khorjuvekar.
