Hockey tragedy raises questions on safety norms in schools

A day after a 14-year-old girl died after being struck by a hockey ball during a school practice session in Guirim, serious questions are being raised about safety measures and supervision during sports activities in schools across Goa.

While the tragic incident has shocked the local community, it has also brought attention to whether proper safeguards”such as protective gear, structured supervision, and emergency preparedness”are in place during high-speed sports like hockey.

Sources said the student was taking part in a routine practice session on the school ground when she was hit by the ball. The physical education teacher was present at the time. She was rushed to the North Goa District Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. However, key questions remain unanswered.

Gear, supervision

It is not yet clear whether the students were provided with protective gear such as face guards or helmets, which are considered essential in organised hockey training to prevent serious injuries.

Education officials are expected to seek a report from the school management on the circumstances leading to the incident. A senior official indicated that existing guidelines, if any, on sports safety in schools may now be reviewed in light of the tragedy.

“We can seek a report from the school. The Monte de Guirim school has a strong sporting tradition and has produced several footballers for the state. This was a very unfortunate incident,” a senior Education Department official said.

Police have registered the case as an unnatural death and are in the process of recording statements to establish the sequence of events. Officials said all angles, including adherence to safety norms, will be examined.

Sports experts say that while hockey is widely played at the school level, basic safety measures are often overlooked. “Even during practice, students should be briefed on safety and, where necessary, use protective equipment, especially when drills involve powerful hits,” a local coach said.

Response gaps

The incident has also raised concerns about emergency response systems in schools. Questions are being asked about whether immediate first aid was given and how quickly the student was taken for medical treatment”factors that can be critical in head injury cases.

Parents and residents in the area have called for stricter enforcement of safety norms and regular checks of school sports infrastructure. “There should be clear guidelines and accountability. Such incidents should not happen,” a local resident said.

As authorities begin inquiries into the incident, the tragedy may serve as a wake-up call for schools to reassess safety standards and ensure that sporting activities do not come at the cost of student safety.
