The decision follows repeated incidents of visitors littering the area with glass and plastic bottles, many of which were found in the riverbed. Villagers said the irresponsible behaviour posed a serious threat to biodiversity and the quality of stored water.
With temperatures rising, the dam had been drawing large crowds for bathing. However, residents said continued disturbances forced them to convene a village meeting two days ago, where a unanimous resolution was passed prohibiting tourist entry until further notice.
The dam, constructed by the Water Resources Department for water conservation, stores monsoon rainwater and supplies irrigation to local farmers during winter. Villagers expressed concern that pollution could affect agricultural use and ecosystem health.
Following the resolution, local youth and residents carried out a clean-up drive, collecting large quantities of waste from the site. They have warned that violations of the ban will invite police complaints and legal action.
The move has been widely welcomed, with citizens urging other villages in Sattari to adopt similar measures to protect local dams and water bodies from pollution, particularly during weekends and holidays.
