Goa will introduce a dedicated Waste Management Technician course to train students in scientific waste handling, recycling systems, and modern disposal practices, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced.

The course has been developed in collaboration with the Skill Development Directorate, Goa State Pollution Control Board, and the Waste Management Department, and will be offered to ITI students to prepare a trained workforce for expanding waste infrastructure in the state.

Speaking at the state-level programme on World Environment Day, the Chief Minister called it a first-of-its-kind initiative in India. “For the first time in the entire country, we are starting a Waste Management Technician course, developed with the Skill Development Directorate, Pollution Control Board, and Waste Management Department, to train ITI students for future requirements,” he stated.

He said the programme is aimed at building technical capacity as Goa scales up its waste management systems and moves towards more structured and scientific operations.

Sawant also highlighted that Goa has already institutionalised waste management at a higher level by creating a separate ministry for it, adding that national bodies have taken note of the state’s approach and facilities.

The course is expected to support long-term manpower needs in segregation, processing, recycling, and facility operations, while also aligning with the state’s broader push for cleaner and more sustainable urban systems.
