From plastic wrappers and food scraps to biomedical refuse and hazardous industrial waste, thousands of tonnes of discarded material generated across Goa each year are being systematically collected, segregated and processed through the State’s expanding waste management network.
According to the Economic Survey 2025-26 tabled on Friday, the Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility at Saligao, operational since 2016, treats 250 tonnes of waste daily, producing roughly 28,000 units of electricity and 7-8 tons of compost each day.
Between April and November 2025, Saligao processed 59,689 tonnes of waste and generated 5.54 lakh units of electricity through biomethanation, alongside an additional 1.65 lakh units from rooftop solar installations.
Meanwhile, the Cacora facility in South Goa, operational since May 2022, treats 100 tonnes of waste daily, generating nearly 10,000 units of electricity and 2-3 tonnes of compost. In the same period, Cacora handled 20,978 tonnes of waste and produced 3.32 lakh units of electricity from wet waste, complemented by 2.39 lakh units from solar power.
The State has strengthened its biomedical and hazardous waste management infrastructure. The Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility at Kundaim IDC, Ponda, treats 4“5 tonnes of biomedical waste daily from over 1,700 healthcare units, processing 1,050 tonnes between April and November 2025.
The Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility at Pissurlem, inaugurated in August 2025, treated 14,206 tonnes of hazardous waste by December using a secured landfill and incineration system. Beyond treatment plants, the government reported that 840 tonnes of waste were collected from National and State Highways and 1,134 tonnes from beaches during 2025“26 (up to December). Phase I of legacy dump remediation cleared 4,52,939 cubic metres of waste and reclaimed 77,304 square metres of land from 11 old dumpsites.
