Fr Diogo Fernandes marks 50 yrs of priesthood service

Fr Diogo Manuel Efficio Fernandes marked a significant milestone, completing 50 years of dedicated service in the priesthood on May 2. His golden jubilee stands as a testament to a lifetime of faith, commitment, and service to both the Church and the wider community.

Born on March 1 in the village of Avedem, Quepem, along the banks of the Kushawati river, Fr Diogo grew up in a devout Catholic family. He was the son of the late Luis Manuel Fernandes and Aninha Lacerda, and was raised alongside his four siblings. He was ordained a priest in 1976, beginning a journey that would span five decades.

Over the years, Fr Diogo has served in several parishes across Goa, including Calangute, Santa Cruz, Anjuna, Maina-Curtorim, Colva, Cortalim, and Verna.

In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Fr Diogo has made notable contributions to education and social development. Recognising the importance of education as a tool for empowerment, he pursued higher studies in Sociology. He also served as a teacher at Rosary College, travelling from Anjuna to fulfil his academic duties.

Fr Diogo was instrumental in establishing schools and higher secondary institutions, including building a church in Maina. His efforts contributed significantly to the growth of Cortalim as an educational hub, with the establishment of a D.Ed. college and a degree college.

Among his notable achievements is the establishment of a Higher Secondary School at São José de Areal, named the Aninha Educational Institute in memory of his late mother. Offering Arts and Science streams. As Chairman, Fr Diogo remains actively involved in guiding its progress.

As he celebrates his golden jubilee, Fr Diogo’s journey reflects not just the passage of time, but a legacy of service that has touched and transformed many lives.
