Pet owners have been urged to remain vigilant following the abduction and sale of a German Shepherd from a residence in Borda, an incident that has raised concerns over the safety of household pets.

The District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) has lodged a complaint with the Fatorda Police, seeking the registration of an FIR against an alleged rag picker accused of abducting the dog and selling it for Rs 4,500.

Speaking to the media outside the Fatorda Police Station, DSPCA Executive Secretary Virginia Simoes said the German Shepherd was taken from a home in Borda on June 5.

“The accused allegedly took the dog to Seraulim and sold it to an animal lover for Rs 4,500. Fortunately, a missing pet post circulated on social media helped trace the dog on the very same night,” Simoes said.

According to her, the dog was reunited with its owner the following day but was found to be exhausted, dehydrated and in a weakened condition. The animal reportedly required intravenous fluids and veterinary care.

Simoes cautioned that similar incidents could occur in the future if swift action is not taken against the accused. “We are sounding a note of caution because this should not become a trend. The individual involved may encourage others by claiming he made quick money through the abduction and sale of a pet dog. Pet owners must take adequate precautions and ensure their dogs do not freely interact with unknown persons,” she said.

The DSPCA has submitted CCTV footage of the suspect to the Fatorda Police and expressed hope that the accused will be identified and booked under the relevant provisions of law.
