Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday raised concerns over the growing number of individuals entering the media field just during election periods while simultaneously pursuing other business interests.

Speaking on the sidelines of a function in Panaji to distribute sanads under the Mhaje Ghar scheme, Sawant said the trend could undermine the credibility of journalism as well as governance.

“Media is a profession that demands integrity. It cannot be used as a tool for business or political convenience,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister stressed that stricter norms for media recognition and press accreditation were necessary to uphold professional standards.

He warned that unchecked entry into the field could erode public trust and distort the democratic processes.

Sawant pointed out that journalism plays a vital role in shaping opinion and holding governments accountable.

“If individuals use media credentials only during elections, it raises serious questions about their intent and credibility,” he said.

Calling for reform, he urged officials to tighten accreditation rules to prevent misuse of the profession.
