Centuries-old Holi ritual draws thousands in Vasco Devotees gather at Khapreshwar Temple in Belabai, Vasco, on Monday to offer coconuts and flowers as part of a 130-year-old tradition marking the beginning of Holi festivities.

VASCO

Devotees from across Vasco and other parts of Goa gathered at the Khapreshwar Temple at Belabai on Monday to observe the centuries-old tradition of offering coconuts and flowers to mark the beginning of Holi festivities in the area.

The ritual, believed to have been followed for over 130 years, continues to draw large numbers of people every year on the eve of Holi. As part of the ceremony, devotees offer coconuts to the deity and seek blessings for peace and prosperity.

Unique ‘Gharaane’ Prayer

A unique feature of the celebration is the ‘gharaaane’ prayer performed by the temple priest. It is believed that this ritual helps cleanse individuals of negative energy and ward off evil influences. Many families consider it an important spiritual practice and make sure they attend the annual observance.

Temple president Umesh Shinde said the tradition has been carefully preserved and passed down through generations. “This custom has been followed here for more than a hundred years. We begin by cutting branches of the mango tree, which are placed in the temple premises, followed by special pooja rituals. After the pooja, coconuts are offered and the priest conducts individual prayers for each devotee,” he said.

Shinde added that the rituals usually begin around 6.30 pm and continue late into the night. “Thousands of devotees arrive every year to seek blessings. The prayers and offerings often continue until the early hours of the morning. The faith associated with this ritual remains strong among the people of Vasco and nearby areas,” he said.

Week-Long Dhul Vaati Celebrations

He further informed that the Dhul Vaati celebrations continue for seven days, along with various social and cultural programmes in the locality.

“After seven days of festivities and community participation, the Holi celebrations conclude in this area,” Shinde said.

The annual ritual once again witnessed a strong turnout, reaffirming the deep-rooted cultural and spiritual traditions associated with Holi in Vasco.
