The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Monday disposed of a petition challenging the appointment of an Election Returning Officer (ERO) for the Canacona Municipal Council after the State Election Commission informed the court that the officer would be transferred.

The Commission told the court that the ERO for Canacona would be moved to Vasco, while the ERO currently in Vasco would be posted to Canacona.

This decision was taken after it came to light that the officer was a registered voter in the same municipal area and had a relative contesting the upcoming civic polls.

Taking note of this assurance, the petitioner, Shubham Komarpant, withdrew the plea, and the court disposed of the matter.

Komarpant had approached the High Court questioning the appointment of the Deputy Collector of Canacona as the ERO, citing a possible conflict of interest.

The Bench had earlier asked the State Election Commission to clarify the issue.
