Experts, industry leaders and students call for stronger sustainability efforts

Belagavi engineers mark Environment Day with focus on climate action

BELAGAVI

The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI), Belagavi Centre, in association with KLE Technological University, Sheshgiri Campus, marked World Environment Day with a strong focus on climate action and sustainable development. The event was held under the theme “A Global Call for Climate Action “ Inspired by Nature, for Climate, for Our Future.”  

In his keynote address, Govind Misale from Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd spoke about his work in the industry and stressed the need for climate-friendly growth and responsible use of resources. He also shared the company’s sustainability efforts, including ethanol production, renewable energy from bagasse, organic manure supply, tree plantation drives, smart energy management systems, and zero liquid discharge practices.  

Chief Guest Hirak Mitra, Head of the Hindalco Innovation Centre, Belagavi, highlighted Hindalco’s work in energy efficiency, renewable energy, decarbonisation, waste recycling, and biodiversity conservation.

He also explained the use of red mud, a by-product of alumina production, in construction and cement manufacturing, supporting a circular economy. He further spoke about the importance of lithium-ion battery technology for clean transport and energy storage.  

Er Vilas Badami, Secretary and Karnataka State Centre Member of IEI, stressed the role of engineers and technologists in promoting environmental sustainability and responsible development.  

S F Patil, Principal of KLE Technological University, spoke about the environmental and economic impact of the El Niño phenomenon and highlighted the need for proper recycling and disposal of electric vehicle batteries.  

Er C B Hiremath, Chairman of IEI Belagavi Local Centre, called for joint efforts by industry, academia, government, and citizens to fight climate change through innovation and sustainable technologies.  

Faculty members, students, researchers, industry representatives, and IEI members took part in the event.
